On July 2, 2025, local time, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, met with Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, in Brussels.
Wang Yi said that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Europe, and the direction of China-Europe relations is a matter of concern to all parties. This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, and the choices made by humanity are under global scrutiny. The more complex and severe the international situation becomes, the more China and Europe, as two great civilizations and two great forces, need to strengthen communication, enhance mutual trust, take responsibility, and firmly act as a force for stability and certainty in the world. The upcoming meeting between Chinese and European leaders is an important meeting held at a key juncture. China looks forward to summarizing with the European side the valuable experiences and important insights of the past 50 years of China-Europe relations, planning the prospects for dialogue and cooperation over the next 50 years, and sending out a clear, positive, and proactive signal to the outside world. China has always supported the process of European integration, and both sides must adhere to multilateralism and free trade, uphold international rules and order, promote the peaceful resolution of international disputes, and work together to address global challenges such as climate change. China is committed to high-quality development and high-level opening up, and is willing to work with the European side to maintain a partnership orientation, deepen economic and trade cooperation, increase mutual openness, consult and properly handle differences, and achieve mutual benefit and win-win outcomes.
Fon Der Leyen stated that the EU and China are about to hold a new meeting of leaders, which is the best time for both sides to jointly celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The EU is committed to developing a stable and constructive EU-China relationship and mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation. I look forward to in-depth communication with Chinese leaders on issues of common concern, demonstrating the commitment and responsibility of the EU and China to further deepen cooperation and jointly address global challenges such as climate change, sending a strong positive signal to the world. The EU continues to adhere to the One-China policy.
